Things to Do When Visiting Thailand

1. Greet with a smile and a “wai” 

The wai — a gesture of palms pressed together with a slight bow — is a traditional Thai greeting used to show respect when meeting, thanking, or saying goodbye. Don’t forget to smile or return the gesture when someone wais to you — it’s considered polite and friendly!

2. Dress appropriately when visiting temples or sacred sites

 Avoid wearing sleeveless tops, short shorts, or tight clothing when entering temples or religious areas. Modest dress shows respect for local culture and the sanctity of the place.

3. Remove your shoes before entering homes or temples

This is a simple yet important sign of respect in Thai culture. Many visitors don’t realize this, but Thais always take off their shoes before entering a house or sacred place.

4. Support local communities 

Try local dishes, buy handmade crafts, and stay in local homestays. Supporting local people helps sustain their way of life and promotes responsible tourism.

5. Respect nature wherever you go

Things Not to Do in Thailand

1. Don’t point your feet at people or sacred objects 

In Thai culture, feet are considered the lowest and least respectful part of the body. Pointing your feet toward someone or a Buddha image is seen as rude.

2. Don’t touch anyone’s head without permission 

The head is considered the most sacred part of the body, even for children. Always ask first, or better yet, avoid touching heads altogether.

3. Avoid excessive public displays of affection 

Holding hands or a light hug is acceptable, but kissing or embracing in public is not widely accepted in Thailand. To respect local norms, keep such gestures private.

4. Don’t speak disrespectfully about the monarchy or religion 

These are deeply sensitive topics in Thailand. Always be respectful and avoid making negative comments about the royal family or Buddhism.

5. Don’t take shells, corals, or stones from the beach as souvenirs 

While it may seem harmless, removing these can harm the marine ecosystem — even touching coral can kill it. Instead, take home memories, not materials.

ประเทศไทย คือ “ดินแดนแห่งรอยยิ้ม” ที่อบอวลไปด้วยเสน่ห์ของศิลปวัฒนธรรมไทยต่างๆ ทั้งเรื่อง อาหารการกิน การใช้ชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ หรือจะเป็นวัดวาอารามสวยๆ ที่งดงามวิจิตร เป็นสิ่งที่นักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติมักชื่นชอบมาก หรือจะเป็นตอกซอยต่างๆ บ้านเรือนที่มีการอนุรักษ์ไว้ก็ตาม ทุกอย่างเป็นเสน่ห์ที่หาที่ไหนไม่ได้ในโลกนี้ แต่ถ้าหากเราพูดถึงภาคใต้ ปลายด้ามขวานของแผนที่ประเทศไทย เราต้องบอกเลยว่า ทะเลที่ภาคใต้สวยไม่แพ้ชาติใดในโลกอย่างแน่นอนค่ะ แล้วเราจะรู้ได้อย่างไรว่า เมื่อมาเยือนประเทศไทย สิ่งไหนควรทำและสิ่งไหนไม่ควรทำ วันนี้ทาง The Pines Phuket จึงมีทริคเล็กๆน้อยๆมาให้ได้เตรียมตัวกันค่ะ

สิ่งที่ควรทำ เมื่อมาเที่ยวประเทศไทย

1. ทักทายด้วยรอยยิ้มและการไหว้ 

“การไหว้” คือสัญลักษณ์ของความเคารพ ใช้เมื่อทักทาย ขอบคุณ หรือกล่าวลากัน เป็นวิถีดั้งเดิมของคนไทยมาช้านานและอย่าลืมยิ้มกลับเมื่อมีคนไหว้คุณด้วยนะคะ เรียกว่าการรับไหว้นั่นเอง

2. แต่งกายสุภาพเมื่อเข้าวัดหรือสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์

การเข้าวัดหรือสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของประเทศไทย ควรหลีกเลี่ยงเสื้อสายเดี่ยว กางเกงขาสั้น หรือชุดรัดรูปเกินไป หรือชุดที่ไม่สุภาพนะคะ เพื่อแสดงความเคารพสถานที่ด้วย

3. ถอดรองเท้าก่อนเข้าบ้านหรือวัด

ข้อนี้เป็นธรรมเนียมง่าย ๆ ที่แสดงถึงความเคารพต่อเจ้าของบ้านและสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ภายในบ้านเรือนค่ะ ชาวต่างชาติส่วนใหญ่อาจไม่รู้กัน 

4. สนับสนุนชุมชนท้องถิ่นต่างๆ

ลองชิมอาหารพื้นบ้าน ซื้อของทำมือ และพักในโฮมสเตย์หรือที่พักของคนในพื้นที่ เพื่อช่วยกระจายรายได้อย่างยั่งยืนมากยิ่งขึ้นค่ะ 

5. เคารพธรรมชาติทุกหนแห่งในประเทศไทย 

แม้ว่าประเทศไทยจะเป็นประเทศที่ค่อนข้างอุดมสมบูรณ์ก็ตาม ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า โดยเฉพาะทะเลใต้ ซึ่งสวยไม่แพ้ทะเลชาติใดในโลกเลยทีเดียว เราอยากให้ทุกคนช่วยกัน อย่าทิ้งขยะทั้งบนบก หรือลงสู่ทะเล และอย่าจับปะการังหรือให้อาหารปลาในที่ที่ไม่ได้รับอนุญาตเด็ดขาดนะคะ เพื่อเป็นการช่วยสิ่งแวดล้อมของธรรมชาติให้คงอยู่นานยิ่งขึ้นค่ะ

สิ่งที่ไม่ควรทำเมื่อมาเที่ยวประเทศไทย

1. อย่าชี้เท้าใส่คนหรือสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์(วัฒนธรรมในประเทศไทย) 

เพราะเท้าเป็นอวัยวะที่ต่ำสุดของร่างกาย คนไทยจึงถือว่าเป็นการไม่ให้เกียรติหากใช้เท้าไม่เหมาะสม เช่น การใช้เท้าชี้ใส่ เป็นต้น

2. อย่าจับหัวคนอื่นโดยไม่ขออนุญาต 

หัวถือเป็นส่วนสูงสุดของร่างกาย ควรหลีกเลี่ยงแม้กับเด็กก้ตาม การขออนุญาตเจ้าของจึงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญนะคะ ควรระมัดระวังเรื่องนี้ด้วยค่ะ

3. อย่าแสดงความรักที่เกินขอบเขต ในที่สาธารณะมากเกินไป 

จับมือหรือโอบเบา ๆ พอได้ แต่อย่าจูบหรือกอดอย่างเปิดเผยในที่สาธารณะเป็นสิ่งที่คนไทยยังไม่ยอมรับเท่าที่ควร เพราะฉะนั้นควรหลีกเลี่ยงดีที่สุดค่ะ

4. อย่าพูดหรือแสดงความไม่เคารพต่อสถาบันหรือศาสนา 

เป็นเรื่องละเอียดอ่อนในวัฒนธรรมไทยเป็นอย่างมาก ควรหลีกเลี่ยงการพูดถึงอย่างไม่ระมัดระวัง

5. หากคุณไปเที่ยวทะเลไทย อย่าเก็บเปลือกหอย ปะการัง หรือหินกลับไปเป็นของที่ระลึก 

ควรปล่อยให้ธรรมชาติอยู่ในที่ของมัน เพราะบางครั้งการไปสัมผัสอย่างเช่นปะการัง อาจทำให้ปะการังแถบนั้นตายได้เลยนะคะ ให้เก็บกลับไปเพียงความทรงจำที่ดีและสวยงามดีกว่าค่ะ
