The Main Causes Behind the Decline of Sea Turtles

1. Plastic Waste in the Ocean Many sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish — one of their favorite foods. Once ingested, the plastic blocks their digestive systems, often leading to death.

2. Commercial Fishing Countless turtles become entangled in fishing nets and are unable to escape. Some are accidentally caught, while others get trapped in discarded “ghost nets,” which prevent them from swimming or surfacing to breathe — causing them to drown.

3. แม้จะมีโครงการอนุรักษ์เต่าเกิดขึ้นมากมาย แต่ข้อมูลจากกรมทรัพยากรทางทะเลและชายฝั่ง (DMCR) ระบุว่า กว่า 60% ของเต่าทะเลที่ฟักออกมาไม่สามารถรอดชีวิตจนถึงวัยเจริญพันธุ์ได้ และยังมีอัตราการตายสูงในช่วง 10 ปีที่ผ่านมาเพิ่มขึ้นในทุกๆปี จากหลายสาเหตุ โดยเฉพาะกิจกรรมของมนุษย์โดยตรง

สาเหตุหลักที่ทำให้เต่าทะเลลดจำนวนลง

• ขยะพลาสติกในทะเล เต่าทะเลมักกลืนถุงพลาสติกเพราะเข้าใจว่าเป็นแมงกะพรุน ส่งผลให้ระบบย่อยอาหารอุดตัน จนไม่สามารถมีชีวิตต่อได้ 

• การทำประมงเชิงพาณิชย์ เต่าทะเลจำนวนมากติดอวนหรือตาข่ายโดยไม่ได้ตั้งใจ และไม่ถูกแกัหรือปล่อยกลับสู่ทะเล บางตัวติดจากอวนที่ถูกทิ้งลงสู่ทะเล ทำให้ไม่สามารถว่ายน้ำหรือใช้ชีวิตได้อย่างปกติ สุดท้ายก็ตายลง
